Summary of QRI 5:
The QRI 5 is an individual assessment of informal reading,
which will provide information about two major components. 1- if a student can
identify words and comprehend a given text successfully. 2- if a student is
unsuccessful in word identification or comprehension. The assessments are
designed evaluate word lists, numerous passages for oral and silent reading and
listening abilities. These assessments help to determine reading levels, for
reading books, literacy circles, independent reading, and workshops. The scores
are determined by the norm of the group because they are identically for all
students.
Summary of DIBELS:
DIBELS s are a set of procedures and measures that assess
the achievement of students K- 6ths literacy skills. These assessments are
designed to be short, one-minute fluency measures to check early literacy and
reading skills. It is suggested that DIBELS be conducted 3 times a year. DIBELS
are made up of seven measurable functions: indicators of
phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy, and fluency with connected
text, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. DIBELS was designed to help
identify students who are struggling early on and as a preventative measure.
Similarities:
Both the QRI 5 and DIBELS are assessments that are used to
determine a students reading level and listening ability. Each assessment
allows you to record the students assessment; allowing for monitoring and
reflection of improvements or backtracks. Both assessments are designed to only
take a short amount of time.
Differences:
A notable difference between the QRI5 and DIBELS is that the
QRI5 is designed for student grades 1st through 12th,
while the DIBELS are designed for students K-6th. Another difference is the
scoring, the QRI5 scoring does not compare the students to each other, where
the DIBELS scoring does compare the student against the group. Also, the scoring
is preformed differently through miscue errors.
I feel both the QRI5 and DIBELS are very variable
assessments. Districts would need to use the one that best fits their population
to help their students succeed. Once the assessment is given and evaluated the
district or teacher can use results to build lesson plans to strength their
students skills.
Have you administered the QRI5 yet? I used the PrePrimer 1 passage but I felt like the child needed pictures to understand.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen these being used in the district you work at?
